They are simple, yet very evocative, with great use of positive and negative space (p. 198). Minimalist works have always seemed more difficult to me because each line or shape needs to be basically perfect; there's not enough going on in the image to distract a viewer from any errant or misshapen areas. For these, because they incorporate physical objects as well as line art, balancing the mass is more complex, too. Basically, while the Instagram Experiments look simple and only incorporate a few well-chosen elements, they're darn hard to do well.
