The art of the textbook doodle

Are textbook doodles "art?"

I think these incredibly detailed scribbles absolutely count. Looking the images over, however, it's hard to tell if they were intended to be simply doodles, or to make some sort of comment on Japanese culture. In this case, I'm opting for the medium being the message.
